Just saw the trailer for Greta Gerwig's upcoming Narnia movie.
And of course, the comments under the video are all from fans of the books who are furiously complaining about a movie they haven't seen.
All about how much they hate the CGI effects (which Lewis would have KILLED to have available in movie technology to put his books on screen while he was alive), and how much they hate the choice of music (the first time in 50 plus years that this legendary song's creators have allowed it to be used in a movie, and it's PERFECT). And how it's going to ruin the story, and even how it's blasphemous.
And all these whiners are sitting there pretending this trailer isn't the most awesome shit they've ever seen, just because they're pissed that Gerwig is "woke*.
Mild spoilers ahead, but not really if you've read the books:
That shit was the most awesome thing any of these whiners have ever seen, AND it was more reverent toward the Christian god than any Christian worship service has ever been.
The moment where everything goes hushed, and existence itself holds its breath waiting to be summoned by HIM...
And then the Lion ROARS the universe into being, in a blaze of power and light and glory and majesty, as the drums explode to echo his Voice and the greatest guitar solo ever played screams a triumphant AMEN as the world's and stars are sung into being by Love himself, awful and resplendent and beautiful and terrible and overflowing with so much life that he cannot contain it in himself any more and must pour it out into an infinite number of new beings...
Blasphemy? It was the holiest thing ever portrayed on a screen. It made this anti religious atheist want to go back to church for a moment. It made me wish once more that the story could be TRUE.
And perhaps the thing I most hate in this moment about the loudest self proclaimed followers of Jesus and fans of Aslan, is that they took away from me forever the illusion that it could BE true.
Because if it was even a little bit true, the loudest fans of Jesus and Aslan wouldn't be such shitty, petty, irreverent, amoral, tasteless assholes.
